Something old, something new, something smashed and something bruised

By Jennifer Fruin.

Believe me, you will not want to miss the ice oval snowmobile racing at the Boonville Fairgrounds on January 30, 31, and February 1, 2009. Speeds on the straight-a-way on this 1/4-mile ice track are in excess of 95mph, corners at around 80, and a heart rate at about 110 beats per second!  You will be afraid to blink as you hear the loud  roar of the motors while breathing in that ice cold air, tickling your nose with the sweet smell of racing fuel.  Aah, I have goosebumps!

Two  famed 4-foot Adirondack Cups will be presented to the  Best of The Best of the Eastern Pro Tour Circuit and the Northern New York Vintage Snow Sled Racers (NNYVSR). The ice track will tell who will end up in the Adirondack Cup Hall of Fame and who will join the Wreck and Roll Club. Last year over 5,000 racing enthusiasts watched racers battle it out on the ice track to earn bragging rights as an Adirondack Cup winner.  Racers layed it all out on the track, some literally by the conditions of their race sleds and suits. But
in the end only two stood tall. Aaron Fellows and Mike Fairbrother went home as the 2008 champions.  This year proves to be even better. Boonville Snow Festival President Sue Kraszewski says, I am very excited to be a part of this years event.  Our event doubled its size last year and we are hoping and preparing to do the same this year.  This is a wonderful event for our community. Area residents, organizations, and business owners have done a wonderful job supporting this festival. We hope that it will continue to grow, not only with just spectators, but with volunteers too.  Our event organizers keep saying we have to crawl before we can walk and I think that we are stepping in the right direction.

One of the new additions to this years event is a radio transmitter that will be broadcasting the event live from the press booth.  So remember to bring your hand held radios so you wont miss any of the action on the track. With so many new events in the making on the Fairgrounds and around town, the Village of Boonville will once again shine as it did in the olden days, when snowmobile enthusiasts braved the cold and the snow and were proud to be called winter warriors.

Snow Festival festivities will kick off Friday, January 30th with test and tune hot laps on the Boonville Fairgrounds starting at approximately 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.  This event is free to all spectators and gives just a little taste of what is to come for the weekend.  At 6 p.m. snowmobilers will line up at the Boonville Search and Rescue building at the Headwaters Plaza on Rt. 12 in Boonville, for the Snowmobile Torchlight Parade.  Snowmobiles will cross Rt.12 and travel down the snowmobile trail into Erwin Park, across the covered bridge, and cross Rt.12 again to go all the way up Schuyler Street onto the ice track at the Boonville Fairgrounds.  At 8 p.m. a breathtaking fireworks display by Majestic Fireworks, Clinton, NY, will glitter the sky above Boonville. All of Boonville will be buzzing with excitement as festival goers hit local night life at Boonville's local eateries and taverns.

Saturday, January 31, gates will open a 8 a.m. for a jam-packed day of nerve rattling, high speed racing.  The NNYVSR will race Saturday. The Eastern Pro circuit will practice Saturday and race on Sunday. The old dogs will shine as they did in the 60s and 70s as they swap paint going ski-to-ski out on the track.  Who will take home the famed Vintage Adirondack Cup?  You'll have to show up on Saturday to find out.

On Sunday, February 1, gates will open at 8 a.m. and racing will begin at 9 a.m.  The Eastern Pro Tour Circuit will be racing to see who will be named the 2009 Big Dog Adirondack Cup winner.  You will not want to miss this cup race. Vendors and concessionaires will be in the Kiwanis building and on the grounds selling hot food, drinks, clothing and other nostalgic items.  Musical entertainment will be provided by David Allyn and WBRV 101.3 FM  and 99.3 FM The Moose, will be hosting a live broadcast.
